My kids are still pretty young – my daughter will be 4 this month and my son is 2.

I’ve tried to get in the habit of praying for them since they were born; actually since they were conceived.

But sometimes I find myself doing something strange when I pray for them...

Praying out of fear.

I have some hang ups – sin that very easily entangles me – and I don’t want them to struggle the same way.

I find myself praying,

“God, please don’t let my beautiful girl struggle with her self-esteem.”

Or,

“God, please don’t let my kids struggle with food.”

While it’s healthy to want them to be healthy – in their view of themselves and of food, they aren’t guaranteed my issues! (Although those are just a few …)

God’s word tells us that as he works to make me more like him and grows me in maturity, I am growing in his love.

It is His love that gets rid of this fear.

I don’t want my kids to know my fear issues – I want them to know HIS love instead.

1 John 4 says it this way …

v. 17-19 (MSG)

"God is love. When we take up permanent residence in a life of love, we live in God and God lives in us. This way, love has the run of the house, becomes at home and mature in us, so that we’re free of worry on Judgment Day—our standing in the world is identical with Christ’s. There is no room in love for fear. Well-formed love banishes fear. Since fear is crippling, a fearful life—fear of death, fear of judgment—is one not yet fully formed in love."

The Psalmist rejoices in this same truth in Psalm 271:

The Lord is my light and my salvation —

    whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the stronghold of my life—

of whom shall I be afraid?

God is our stronghold – He is on our side.
He is also perfect love.  In Him, there is no room for fear.

Join me in prayer today:

God, thank you that You are our light and our salvation.  Thank you that even when fear is trying to make room in my heart, Your perfect love is making things right.  We lift our beautiful children to You.   We pray that they would know Your love fully – that they would mature in that love and they would know freedom from worry.  Gracious Lord, You are their stronghold.  Let them not be afraid.
