From celebrities who think they are above the law to preschoolers who expect to get what they want right when they want it, there is a very real spirit of entitlement in our culture.
In fact, a popular motto in our society is this: Don't let anyone make you feel like you don't deserve what you want.
I encounter too often a battle in my own heart & mind regarding what I "deserve" to experience or possess in this life.
And I see this same battle in the little hearts & minds of my children.
To feel entitled is to believe that one is deserving of certain rights and privileges above someone else.
To feel entitled is a slippery slope and most often leads to foolish moral choices.
Take King David for example.
He has this incredible story of defeating the great Goliath as a young man, escaping king Saul's jealous hand of murder, is made king over Israel, and is promised by God Himself that his name will be great and his throne will be established forever. [1 Samuel 17, 19; 2 Samuel 5, 7]
He was a man blessed by God with much to be thankful for and humbled by.
But when he sees the beautiful, yet very married, Bathsheba and becomes consumed with lust for her, a spirit of entitlement rears its prideful head and leads him down a path of complete moral devastation.
The "I deserve this" mentality trumps humble obedience to God and he commits adultery with her, schemes to cover up her pregnancy through deceitful shenanigans, and finally commits cold-blooded murder.
All this moral devastation...because he saw something he wanted and told himself that he DESERVED it.
The consequences to himself, Bathsheba, her husband, and to the people of Israel were of no consideration to him while consumed and controlled by such a strong spirit of entitlement.
At the root of this spirit of entitlement is the sinful reality of PRIDE.
PRIDE is an inflated sense of self and leads one to believe he/she is worthy of all that he/she desires.
PRIDE leaves little, if any, regard for God and His greatness.
Thus, PRIDE fuels the spirit of entitlement in our hearts and sets us firmly, ironically enough, down the slippery slope toward moral devastation.
God's Word teaches that the perfect prescription for PRIDE and its Spirit of Entitlement is HUMILITY.
- Humility invites the GRACE of God, whereas Pride invites His judgment. [James 4:6]
- Humility births wisdom, whereas foolish Pride births disgrace. [Proverbs 11:2]
- Humility is rewarded with wealth, honor, and life, whereas Pride is rewarded with destruction. [Proverbs 22:4; Psalm 147:6]
- Humility cultivates relationship and communication with God, whereas Pride poisons it. [2 Chronicles 34:27]
We, as well as our children, are called to WALK HUMBLY WITH GOD [Micah 6:8] leaving no room for pride's spirit of entitlement.
And our attitude should NOT be consumed by deserving thoughts, but rather by thoughts of humility and thankfulness to our God who has blessed us in so many incomparable ways.
Join me today and let's pray against a Spirit of Entitlement in the hearts & minds of our precious children.
Jesus, Even You the God of this Universe came to this earth as a humble servant with NO spirit of entitlement. Today I ask that You would uproot pride and a spirit of entitlement in the hearts of my children. Protect them from the path of moral devastation brought about by pride. May their "I deserve this" thoughts be replaced by thoughts of humility and thankfulness toward You. And may humility cover them in Your grace and wisdom, as well as, cultivate a relationship with You.
